How to add a stream overlay in OBS

If you stream, there are three pages meant to be loaded as an OBS browser source rather than read by a person.

  • The goal overlay shows your active goal and its bar.
  • The wall overlay shows recent approved messages.
  • The alert overlay announces one support at a time, for a few seconds.

They are at your page address followed by /overlay/goal, /overlay/wall and /overlay/alert. The Share page in your dashboard has a Stream tab with all three addresses, a preview of each, and a button that sends a test alert so you can aim the box before you go live.

Adding one in OBS

  1. Add a source, pick Browser.
  2. Paste the address.
  3. Set the width and height to the space you want it to fill. The Stream tab suggests a size for each.
  4. Leave Shutdown source when not visible off.
  5. Leave Refresh browser when scene becomes active off. It reloads the page every time you switch scenes, and a reload makes the alert overlay forget what it has already shown, so you would miss alerts that arrived while you were away.

They keep themselves up to date

You do not need to touch OBS after setting a source up. Each overlay asks Kulhad for new information every few seconds, so approving on your phone between songs moves the goal bar and adds to the wall on its own.

The background is always transparent. There is nothing to switch on and no setting to add to the address: an overlay draws only the text and the bar, with nothing behind it, which is what you want over gameplay.

When the alert appears

By default an alert appears when you approve a support. Nothing reaches your stream before you have looked at it.

In the Stream tab you can change this to as soon as someone marks a support as paid. That is faster, and it is worth knowing what you are choosing. Kulhad cannot see your bank account, so it cannot tell whether money arrived. Anyone can mark a support as paid without sending anything. In that mode the alert appears before you have checked, and once it has been on screen there is no taking it back. Messages are never shown in that mode, only a name and an amount.

Sound

The overlays are silent. OBS decides whether a browser source may play audio, and rather than ship something that works on one machine and not the next, the alert is a picture only.

Why it works in OBS

An OBS browser source is a browser, and it obeys the same rules a web page does about whether it may be framed. These pages are explicitly allowed to be, which is why they render rather than showing a blank box.

What appears on the wall overlay

Only messages you have approved. A message you approved but chose to hide stays hidden here too, and someone who sent anonymously is shown as someone.
